John 3;3b, 5b-7, 16
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he
cannot see the kingdom of God.
Except a man be borne of the water, and of the Spirit, he cannot
enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh;
and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I
say unto thee, Ye must be born again.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have
everlasting life.
There have been many prominent, irreligious people in the last
few years who make the claim that they've been born again.
Many of these folks don't have a clue of what it means to be born
again. They believe that being born again is making up their minds
to do good things instead of bad things. Some decide that they'll be
honest instead of being deceitful. Some decide that they'll be
benevolent and helpful instead of grabbing everything they can
and hanging on to it or using it selfishly.
But I submit to you today that you're not born again by reforming
and doing good. You are born again by seeing yourself as a vile sinner,
repenting of your sins, and trusting Jesus to save you from sin and
give you a new life. Then you will be "created in Christ Jesus
unto good works." II Corinthians 5;17 says, "Therefore if any man
be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new."
Billy Graham, in his book "Peace with God" gives three examples
of people being saved and showing evidence of it.
1. One night in a revival, a saloon owner was converted. The next
morning the saloon was closed and had a notice on the door: "Out
of Business". He had been changed; he could no longer, with a clear
conscience, sell the alcoholic beverages that cause so much loss
and heartaches.
2. Another was about a town drunk called "Old John". One night he
was converted in a crusade meeting. The next morning one of his
old friends greeted him with, "Good Morning, Old John."
"Old John?' I'm not Old John anymore! I'm New John!"
3. I believe God has inspired me to write my Poem of the Week
about that person. See it below.
1. Sitting still and wishing
Made no person great;
The good Lord sends the fishing,
But you must dig the bait.
2. An answer to this question
Is what I greatly wish;
Does fishing make men liars----
Or do only liars fish?

'Twas way down in south Texas,
many, many long years ago,
there lived a mean and rotten cowboy
that we'll just call "Wicked Joe".
Life there got mighty lonely,
riding fence line all alone;
by the time the weekend had arrived,
Joe's patience was all but gone.
When Friday's work was ended,
Wicked Joe would take a bath
shave, put on cologne and clean clothes,
and he'd hit the good times path.
He'd hitch his horse out in front
of a saloon called "Blazin' Gun",
and go inside to drink some booze,
then go out and look for fun.
He might sneak to Ma Green's cowlot,
and put her milch cows on the run.
Or rope an outhouse and pull it down,
all done in the name of fun.
Sometimes he'd scare some kids to death
firing his six gun into the sky;
or sic "old Beller" on the widow's cat;
just to see and hear her cry.
Wicked Joe's horse at that hitching post
out in front of that old bar,
scared most folks out of their wits,
for they knew their day was marred;
then one day the local churches
built a brush arbor outside of town.
Folks started attending the services;
they came in from all around.
Wicked Joe rode in and hitched at the saloon,
and he noticed a difference all around;
things were quieter and more peaceful,
and everyone was going out of town.
Joe was curious, so he followed
all the people to the meeting
and, as he wondered what was happening,
all those good folks started singing.
The preacher opened up his Bible,
and he began to read the Word.
Old Joe just stood outside and listened
to the Good News he'd never heard.
And that very night old Wicked Joe
got converted from his sin,
and he fell down there upon his knees
and asked the Saviour to come in.
Sunday came and old Joe's horse
at the saloon's rail could not be seen,
and the patrons began to wonder
just what all of this could mean.
Then Old Joe came in all smiles and joy,
and said, "Boys, this is no boast,
Last night Jesus saved me,
and I've changed my hitching post!
"Yes, I'll hitch my horse up at the church;
I won't come here anymore,
for Jesus gave me the life I've needed,
and I'm different that before,
and, I hope that you will do the same,
and you'll listen, every one of you,
Your hitching post, You need to change!
